Peralkaline granites, representing the most volumetrically significant component of the Topsails igneous complex, occur throughout the northern Appalachians in Newfoundland, the Gulf of Maine, northern New Hampshire, and eastern Massachusetts. In central Newfoundland (NTS 12A/10, 15, 16, 2H/1), As, Pb, and Zn concentrations in the clay-sized .

Distinct 18 O depletion is characteristic of a large majority of the – Ma felsic igneous rocks of Avalonia in the northern Appalachian orogen. Neoproterozoic rocks in the Boston Avalon terrane have the lowest δ 18 O WR values (≥–‰), followed by the Mira terrane in Cape Breton Island and the Caledonia terrane in New Brunswick (≥–‰), the Avalon terrane in Newfoundland. Vertical and areal distributions of lead, copper, and zinc indicate that Geology and glaciolacustrine sediments overlying sulphide deposits can be enriched in mineralized debris. The Topsails igneous terrane of Western Newfoundland contains a diverse suite of igneous rocks, but consists mainly of Silurian alkaline to peralkaline granites and rhyolites.

The terrane exhibits evidence for the coexistence of mafic and salic magmas in the form of composite dykes and flows, sinuous, boudined mafic dykes cutting granites and net vein by: The voluminous (~6, km 3) Late Ordovician to Silurian Topsails igneous suite is a diverse group of bimodal igneous rocks, consisting mainly of peraluminous to peralkaline, subsolvus to hypersolvus intrudes and overlies Early to Middle Ordovician subduction-related calc-alkaline intrusive and volcanic rocks.
