Peralkaline granites, representing the most volumetrically significant component of the Topsails igneous complex, occur throughout the northern Appalachians in Newfoundland, the Gulf of Maine, northern New Hampshire, and eastern Massachusetts. In central Newfoundland (NTS 12A/10, 15, 16, 2H/1), As, Pb, and Zn concentrations in the clay-sized .
Distinct 18 O depletion is characteristic of a large majority of the – Ma felsic igneous rocks of Avalonia in the northern Appalachian orogen. Neoproterozoic rocks in the Boston Avalon terrane have the lowest δ 18 O WR values (≥–‰), followed by the Mira terrane in Cape Breton Island and the Caledonia terrane in New Brunswick (≥–‰), the Avalon terrane in Newfoundland. The discovery of a major ore deposit at Voisey's Bay, Labrador, in and the successful development of the Hibernia offshore oil field highlight a long tradition of mining and resource use dating back to prehistoric time when the Maritime Archaic Indians quarried Ramah chert in northern.

Vertical and areal distributions of lead, copper, and zinc indicate that Geology and glaciolacustrine sediments overlying sulphide deposits can be enriched in mineralized debris. Near mines at Buchans surficial debris-flow deposits contain much material derived from the Topsails igneous terrane and are generally impoverished in mineralized debris.
The Topsails igneous terrane of Western Newfoundland contains a diverse suite of igneous rocks, but consists mainly of Silurian alkaline to peralkaline granites and rhyolites.
The terrane exhibits evidence for the coexistence of mafic and salic magmas in the form of composite dykes and flows, sinuous, boudined mafic dykes cutting granites and net vein by: The voluminous (~6, km 3) Late Ordovician to Silurian Topsails igneous suite is a diverse group of bimodal igneous rocks, consisting mainly of peraluminous to peralkaline, subsolvus to hypersolvus intrudes and overlies Early to Middle Ordovician subduction-related calc-alkaline intrusive and volcanic rocks.
Petrogenetic modeling suggests the peralkaline phases formed by. Newfoundland. In contrast to neighboring Labrador, the island of Newfoundland is largely underlain by younger rocks. The Churchill, Nain, Superior and Grenville Province present in Labrador were all small continents or pieces of continental lithosphere that joined to form sections of the proto-North American continent Laurentia and the broad stable region known as the Canadian Shield.

In central Newfoundland (NTS 12A/10, 15, 16, 2H/1), As, Pb, and Zn concentrations in the clay-sized (< mm) and silt and clay-sized (< mm) fractions of till reflect compositional differences among and within rock terranes at scales of kilometers to tens of kilometers.
In those fractions, till derived from volcanic bedrock of Victoria Lake Group (Tulks Hill) is notably enriched. In central Newfoundland (NTS 12A/10, 15, 16, 2H/1), As, Pb, and Zn concentrations in the clay-sized ( ppm), exceeding levels commonly set for purposes of environmental protection.
Near Pb-Zn mines at Buchans, geochemical variation with depth reflects the dispersal of detritus from mineralized bedrock, and differences in sediment type and provenance. Avalonia was a microcontinent in the Paleozoic l fragments of this former microcontinent underlie south-west Great Britain, southern Ireland, and the eastern coast of North is the source of many of the older rocks of Western Europe, Atlantic Canada, and parts of the coastal United ia is named for the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland.
Topsails suite The Topsails suite consists of quartz syenites, subsolvus and hypersolvus biotite-amphibole granites, arfvedsonite-aegirine granites and quartz Kfeldspar porphyrys (Whalen and Currie, ; Whalen et ai., b). These rocks are the dominant lithologies of the Lower Palaeozoic Topsails igneous terrane of western Newfoundland.Department of Geology and Mineralogy, Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3PR UK.
